so many pieces of armour.
i will not question the cartwheeling man-at-arms. i am just going to go with the story of that being an advanced move.

A good question, no problem.

The Surcoats and the escutcheon are invented to identify the Knights and other warriors in the Battle. They becomes massiv popularity because the Greathelmet hidden the Face behind Stell. In the 12. century warriors wears Surcoats over hers mail armour. In the 13. century cecomes the Armour the first parts of stellplates for the Body, first for the Arms and the Legs ( very important on Horseback ) and also for the torso, look here the Coat of Plates ( a poncho style cloth with overlapping riveted Stellplates inside ). But this Armour is very fameless today, because they wears under the Surcoat, hidden on Knight statues and old manuscripts.

In the late 14. century becomes the Surcoats an change, the Armour is now completely ( for all parts of the Body ) and a new style is born:
the "White" Armour. White stays for the metal colour Silver, see here the early full Harness c. 1400 ( this kind of Armour are use at Agincourt )
The Surcoats becomes a new scissored and the Warriors Wears this some time under or over the Armour.

The new Surcoat called Tabard, often use by
Heralds and some Knights ( Look here my picture John Sommerset:[link]
The standard-bearer in the middle wears an Tabard over his Armour. But the Most of full Armoured Warriors use an simply coloured sash.
And these coloured sashes still use in the thirtyyears War.
